Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 180000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I'm wondering what might be the problem for my car. When I start the car, it runs fine. After a few minutes and warming up, when I come to a stop at a light or sign, the car drops to 4-500 rpms and the engine shakes slowly and rpm needle jumps... as if it's about to stall. So I have to hold the brake and lightly shift my foot over to press the gas a little to bring it up to 8 or 900 rpm so the car will be smooth running again. It's problematic in reverse as well cause I usually don't use the gas. I just idol. Therefore the car is really jumpy when going in reverse. Any ideas? A sensor or something? All fluids are at a normal level.

check the idle air control valve, this sensor is usually the cause of this type of symptom
