Engine Cooling problem
1996 Plymouth Voyager 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 114000 miles

After a 250 mile drive, noticed steam emitting from the engine, with no indication of overheating by the engine temp gauge. When the hood was opened, brother noticed a pin hole break in the large radiator hose where one of the spark plug wires runs close to the clamp and hose. Antifreeze had sprayed over the engine. He replaced the hose and clamp, but now there's a steady speed correlated ticking noise. We applied belt dressing and drove 250 miles home, but the noise is louder than ever. The belt looks okay, so does it need tightening? Or is there a water pump problem? Should we go to a auto place like PepBoys or to the dealer for help?

Hi:
The serp belt is not adjustable. It has an automatic tensionier. Can you isolate the sound to a specific part of the engine compartment? A ticking usually doesn't come from the belt. Usually it's from a lifter in the engine. Is the oil full and in good condition?

Checked the oil. It's fine, was changed recently.
Car went to Pep Boys today. They replaced belt and engine is now quiet. Guy said belt grooves were damaged by antifreeeze causing slip and hence the belt noise. The sound was more of a belt noise than a tick - hard to describe noises with words.

Thanks for your help.
