Electrical problem
1996 Other Mitsubishi Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 113423 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey dudes,
My 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.5L is giving me a hard time to fix it. I recently changed the head gasket and valve cover seal. After I finished adjusting the timing from the distrubutor the car sounded a little reved up than before. The car would idle, but rev up and back down and sometimes stay reved for a few minutes. I drove it for about two days and it all the sudden shut off on the highway. I tried cranking back up and it wouldn't do anything except turn the starter. I have checked the ignition coil in the distributor and it is good. I narrowed it down to the wiring because when I hooked the scanner to the car and it read linkage error. I hooked a different scanner to it and it did the same thing. I finally disconnected the ECM wiring one by one and spray it with contact oil, then reconnected them, but no luck after that. Please I need your guidance Car Pros!

Hi ovilc88,

Some Mitsubishi do not allow normal scanners to read the codes.

You can do it manually. At the OBD II socket, loop terminal 1 and 4 and count the blinks on the check engine.

Hey man, I asked a question about the mitsubishi mirage not starting and you said to loop terminals 1 and 4 on the odp II and tell you how many times the engine light blinked. I just wanted to get something clear, when you said "loop" is that the same as "jump"?

Hi ovilc88,

Yes, loop = jump = bridge.

By doing this, you can get to know if there are any error codes stored in the ECM.

It could tell us which component is causing the engine not to start.

Hey my friend,
I tried to jump terminals 1 and 4, but I had no luck. I put the wire in to jump'em but nothing blinked. I put the key in all the different positions and nothing happened. I also wanted to add that I went to the junk yard and picked up a clean crankshaft sensor, and another computer for the car. So now the car has a new distributor with coil, crankshaft sensor, and ECM. Would it be worth putting the original ECM back in and then try to jump the terminals? Please let me know if you have any more ideas. Thank you.
