Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 171000 miles
I have a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS 2.0L Non Turbo 4 cylinder engine code 420A that has me baffled. When I start the car after it has cooled or not been started in a while it starts up fine and runs good. The problem is that when it runs for a while it dies and will not start again until it cools for a bit. The water temp gauge doesn't really mean anything to it as far as warm and cool because the temp comes up pretty quick on the gauge and the car will run maybe 10-15 mins and then stumble and shut off. When I try to start it back, it sounds like it tries to fire and sputters a little bit but will not stay running. I have put a new Ignition Module on it, new wires, new plugs, fuel filter, new automatic shutdown and fuel pump relays and a new upstream oxygen sensor. I check the fuel pressure at the rail and it holds a steady 50 psi even when the car shuts off so it doesn't seem to be a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator issue. Could it be the downstream O2 sensor or the catalytic converter? Thank you for the website and thank you in advance. |

Hi abcaldwe and TY for the donation
The problem is that when it runs for a while it dies and will not start again until it cools for a bit. Don't wait for it to cool do below immediately to catch if its fuel or spark problem.
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it |
