Transmission problem 1996 Mercury Villager 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 179000 miles I started my car first thing this morning without a hitch. But when I pulled on the gear selector, there seemed to be nothing connected to the rod as I could freely move the gear arm from PARK to !st without any friction, or gear selections. It was like the rod was not connected to anything, and the transmission would not go into gear. When I returned home at lunch, I started the van just to see if it continued the problem. This time there seemed to be a little frcition as I moved the gear selector, and I'm able to put the transmission in gear and drive without a problem. What might cause this situation? Scott
