Engine Performance problem
1996 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 170000 miles

Yesterday on the way home from my parents, our Jeep's check engine light came on. About a quarter mile before that, it started driving slower and felt as though it might cut off. I lowered my speed and made it to a gas station that was open so I could check the problem. The oil pressure had dropped in half according to the gauge. I checked the oil level and it was fine. Transmission, as well. I took a chance and drove slowly the rest of the way home. The light didn't come on this morning and drove ok. What could have caused this? I don't want to assume everything is fine only to find out there was something I should have taken care of and end up stranded. Thank you for any responses!
