Transmission problem

This morning I drove to work and the trucks transmission was very hard to engage through the gears. At lights, it would stall out, and would not go back into first gear, I tried to put it in reverse and all that it did was grind. My buddy seems to think I need a new clutch, and if so, how much does that usually cost? With labor?

check clutch master cylinder and fluid
check for leaks
check slave cylinder
