Engine Cooling problem

I just paid over 500 dollars to have my heater core replaced in my car. I had all the usual symptoms including the white smoke, the smell, the wet front seat floor, and the overheating engine. After having the car back for one day, I noticed the smell again and sure enough the carpet was wet in the same spot. My question is whether there is an underlying problem that is causing the heater core to blow or was it a faulty part or a mistake on behalf of the mechanic? I just want to know if this will continue to occur and if I should cut my loses now by junking the car?
