Engine Performance problem
1996 Ford Contour 4 cyl Automatic

I don't really know much about cars, but here we go anyway. I've just bought a 1996 ford contour from a friend of mine. he told me that there was some problems with it, but my dad said its nothing he can't fix. so i bought it. i get like 30mins away from my house & the car starts to act up. at stop lights the car will start to vibrate really hard & when i press the gas the car will turn off or i ill have to keep pressing the gas so it won't turn off. so far we change the transmission fluid & oil, the air & fuel filters. but now the car sometimes won't even turn on. i need help & this is my first car.
