1996 Ford Contour 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles

I just bought 96 ford contour 140000 miles on motor. Needs front motor mount but runs great. Had it smogged and it passed with flying colors. Soon as I drove out of smog place car seemed to idle higher at stop sign. I drove about 8 miles home and car started to make rattle noise. The coolant was ok. but on take off it would rattle. Next day drove it 30 miles and in the heat of the day it rattled louder but not overheating. The check engine light came on but it still runs fine what could be the problem? Thanks for you input.
