Hi everyone, this is my first post to this forum. We are a German auto-shop located in New Jersey and have been in business for over 30 years. We recently were doing some cleaning up in the shop and came across a few brand new BMW transmissions that, despite our hardest efforts, have not been able to be identified. Attached I have several pictures which include all markings on the transmissions body. What we do know is that it is a manual transmission and the head mechanic seems to think it may belong to a 5Series (1988-1989). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've spent an hour poking around through old manuals and such without much success. Alldata does have exploded views, but haven't got much more time at the moment.

Couple thoughts for leads,
Ebay-I didn't find one, but therer are a handful of remanufactures there
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-1992-BMW-535i-Rebuilt-Automatic-Transmission_W0QQitemZ200167142913QQihZ010QQcategoryZ33617QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Contact JAsper transmissions or a local rebuilder maybe.

If something comes up, I'll update the post.

Wow you guys are good. I have like 8 more BMW transmissions here that I could really use help on. Are you guys up for the challenge?

I'm looking to sell them all so naturally any information would be of great help. Also, I know you guys don't help people for the sole purpose of getting donations but you guys put time into helping me and making this great website so I'd be happy to make a donation.

Hahah, you guys are comical. I really do appreciate the help -- we just put two trannies on ebay. Alot of people showing interest in them already which is great news.

Here is the listing if you are interested in seeing it:

Alrighty, next transmission up for identification is this manual Getrag 262. I've had a few leads on this transmission but with conflicting information, so I'm going to keep that information to myself to not throw you helpful guys off Smile

And here are the photos:

Thanks for everything guys -- and like I said before, your time is valuable just like mine so expect a kickback once these start selling.

PS: I'll check back during lunch-breaks from time to time to see if theres anything I can add to any other user's questions. We've been in business for 30 years and have been working on BMW, AUDI, M/B, and PORSCHE since the beginning.

Found some information, confused me more because I have no way of knowing whether this is 262CR or straight 262 wrote:
262 is a four speed. The 262 transmission is in three sections: tail casting, main case and bellhousing.

265 is a five-speed with overdrive 5th. The 265 is in four sections:tail casting, intermediate casting, main case and bellhousing. To makethings tricky, the 265 frequently (if not always) have a 262 number onthe main case as that portion is identical to the four-speed 262.

262CR is a "close ratio" five-speed with 1:1 fifth. The 262CR also hasfour sections as the 265. To distinguish a 262CR from a 265 you look atthe intermediate casting. The intermediate casting on the 262CRapparently has a rougher finish than the other castings on thetransmission. Also, the bolt holes on the intermediate case are alignedon both ends of the intermediate case so that it appears that you couldremove that section and bolt up the tail casting to the main case (thatis not the case with the 265).

The information I am presenting on the 262CR is from info I got fromthe Metric Mechanic site -- I have never seen one in person. I someonehas info that contradicts this feel free to comment.

they look like five speed transmissions also known as
265. if they were four speed, they would be two sections, not three.
if you think they may be close, ratio check the shift pattern. the CR trannys have a "dog leg" pattern
(first gear is to the left and down below reverse
and if not a CR, fifth gear is to the right and up)
hope this helps.
send a PM if you need more help

BTW I don't consider the bell housing as part of the transmission.
