Engine Cooling problem

Ive been told by my mobile mechanic that the core plug has gone on my bmw 318 and that is can not be done at the road side and needs to be done in a work shop and if it cant be seen from on the ramps the engine may have to be dropped. This sounds a bit expensive to me, can this be done any other way and is it possible for me to do myself? Core plugs look only to be about £4 for a set so is it the labour that could possible make this expensive? Do you know approx how much?

Is there a coolant leak from the rear of the engine area? The back of the head is difficult to access and if it is indeed the freeze plug(possible but I have my doubts) the engine coming out of the car is a possibility.
