Heater problem

I had a mechanic troubleshoot my heater not putting out heat. He traced it to the blend door not opening. He was able to force it open using some diagnostic equip. (not sure exactly what he did). He said it would be costly to replace the blend door and actuator, ($1400.00). Is there an easier/cheaper way to resolve this problem? I would be even be satisfied with a manual push/pull knob. I just need heat.
