Engine Cooling problem

Ive found the spot where all the smoke/fluid is coming out I was told it was from the thermostat. Which was right under the air intake tubing where theres like a 2in diameter house connecting to the air intake. Is there anything that I should know before i start replacing the thermostat an gasket?
