1989 Buick Lesabre Automatic 198000 miles

My battery light came on, and the car died. So i had it jumped then I took it to Wal-mart got the right battery put it in. Everything is connected right and the cables are nice and tight but the 'volts' light still won't go off. Any ideas on what is going on?

Have the charging system checked out could be the alternator not putting out-
