Steering problem
1995 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 148K miles

I have no problems when car is running and brakes are applied, however have a unique scenario that when the car is not in motion (say waiting at the intersection lights) and brakes have been applied, I feel vibrations on the steering wheel.
When I change the gear stick from D(Drive) to N (Neutral) the vibrations fade out considerately.
Please help me to figure out if this is anything to do with CV joint/axle, mounts etc etc. I have take to couple of mechanics and they haven't been able to figure out.

Hi yocar,

The engine mount conditions are not good causing the vibration.

Thanks for your response.

I had already replaced the front engine mount (twice) and the engine torque mount, but still have the same problem.

Do you have any other advice?

When in forward gears, the rear engine mount is the one that is being stressed.

Is the vibration the same when reverse is engaged?

No, I do not feel the vibrations when the gear is in reverse and the car is standstill.
May be as you mentioned the rear engine mount could be the one.
Do you think it will be costly to get the rear engine mount checked? (I mean can the mechanic check this without taking the engine out?)

A simple way to check the rear mount is to watch the engine while someone engages reverse with engine running and brakes applied.

If the engine moves forward with a jerking motion and the movement is more than an inch, the mount should be bad. Be sure to check the upper torque rod position first. Disconnecting it would make the engine movement easier to detect.
