1995 Plymouth Acclaim Accelerator sticks

1995 Plymouth Acclaim 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 90,000 miles

I was driving and my accelerator pedal started sticking and had a hard time stopping. Now my car runs real rough and really is not drivable. Initially, I had noticed my car seemed like it was getting louder, like the exhaust or something. It seems like the tail pipe is loose. Could any of this be related to each other. I am not sure, but it seems like the exhaust pipe has a gap where it goes into the engine. Sorry I am having a hard time explaining this. I obviously don't know much about cars. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Your car uses a simple, reliable throttle cable, not the silly electronic motor-driven throttle that Toyota is having all the trouble with. Many manufacturers are using that goofy system now, and a lot of problems were predicted a long time ago.

Your cable is most likely not sticking. If the engine is idling too fast, suspect a vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket or one of the vacuum hoses. To try to find the leak, when the engine is still cold and running, use a squirt bottle to spray water onto the hoses and gaskets. When you find the leak, the water will get sucked in and the engine will slow down momentarily.

The exhaust system should be inspected before the fumes get to you. Places like Sears offer free inspections.
