Engine Mechanical problem

Hi there
When driving home from work last night my nissan micra cut out on me and would not re-start. I tried bump starting but no good.
When I tried to get her going again, all I could hear was the high pitched whine from the starter.
It sounds like something is not catching somewhere to get the engine going.
Does anyone know what the symptoms are of a timing chain letting go?
Or any other ideas of what is going on ?

If you turn the key with the car in first gear, it will bunny hop forward so I don't think the engine is seized.
The car has only done 59000 miles, there are no oil leaks and the engine is very clean

the whine usually means the timing belt is broken because the engine is turninng over faster due to no compression
