Engine Performance problem
1995 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 230000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

I have a Jeep Cherokee 6cyl 95 Limited and have in the last 12 months had a LPG system fitted with a 45 litre petrol tank put in for dual fuel under the centre of teh car. I am having a small problem where the LPG fuel when driving along just cuts out, this also happens when braking at traffic lights, when drving i could be doing 60kmh with low revs and no change to speed or revs and it LPG cuts out, I have not nothed this with petrol but do not drive on petrol very often. I have noted that since the time of install of the LPG system the car has been quite heavy on gas with 20Litre to 100Km. The spark plugs have been changed with larger gap north american plugs (im in australia), the leads have been replaced with high volt/amp leads and the oxygen sensor has been replaced, the car has been tuned on a electronic machien at the car repaires and a MUTT plugged in for faults which i was told came back OK but slighly rich. Before I take it into the mechanic I would like to have so!
me idea of what could be wrong.

How often do LPG gas system need to be serviced? This appears to be a fuel delivery problem to me becuase after it stalls it is easier to flick the switch, start on petrol and drive for a few hundred meters and put back on gas, i have been able to start on gas after a stall but took 20 secs of cranking over, petrol starts relatively easily. This has only happend 7-8 times so far but always at steady speeds or slowing down speeds.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

I think I have an answer to my question and it was a lose ground wire on the LPG solenoid, local Ultratune found the issue for under AUD$80 so im pretty happy about that.

Let me start by saying I got my car converted becuase petrol prices where getting very high and I use my car for work, the australian government also has a AUD$2000 rebate for converting your second hand car to gas so thsi was a good incentive as well. Due to a rush on everyone wanting gas thsi process took over 7 months of waiting and teh price going from AUS$2700 to AUD$3500, phoning around I found that all gas fitters where doing the same price hike.

I had a Sprint Autogas 80L system fitted with learning computer and initaly had a few problems mostly due to auogas mechanics shop not test driving or tuning the car to gas. This resulted in the spark plugs (Jeep specific north american larger space for gas plugs), high perfomance leads and genuine jeep oxygen sensor having to be replaced in the first week and later down the track (approx 3 months)the petrol fuel filler hose becuase a raditaor hose was put in from the body fuel filler to new tank metal tube, it didnt take long for petrol to eat through the hose but AUD$20 got me a new petrol resistant hose that i coudl fit myself. I also had a large rattle coming from the back from a weld that had broken and the exhaust rattling around that the inital gas installer fixed. The Jeep was quite heavy on gas and i was pretty annoyed with the inital gas fitter and the local Ultratune tuned the gas for free which took 5 minutes in their workshop, mileage went from 27/100km to approx 19.5/100km. On petrol I am getting 16/100km but the car is 13 years old and on first motor without a rebuild. I measured this with 3 tanks of gas and averaging the kilometers.

I did not lose much power on gas, i can hardly notice the power loss. I found the gas gauge (1 red bar and 4 green bars from left to right on a small black mount on my dash) does not indictae how much gas I have left very well, when im down to the red bar(last bar) I still have 45L left. The second petrol tank under the pasenger side middle of the car has cuased no issue and this is what increased the price of the conversion over a normal sedan conversion with tank in the boot. I dod not lose any space in the car and the conversion fits very neatly underneath, under the bonnet is quite busy with the new gas equipment inmtroduced but no issues.

Not wanting to go back to the inital gas fitter has caused a few issues and in the last week, I found that with the issue i mentioned of engine cutting out it would have been handy to be able to find someone else who fits the same brand/type of gas conversion becuse they would have had laptop, mutt cable and specific software to plug in to the learning computer for the gas system to pull the codes and tell what was going wrong, Ultratune where able to find the problem and at a good price so I got lucky.

Hope this helps.
