1995 Ford Escort my car won't accelerate.

Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 233491 miles

I press on the accelerator and sometimes even if I push it all the way to the floor and nothing happens. In first, second and third gear it has a problem accelerating if and when I get the speed up it handles fine with the exception of some shaking. I need to know if this is an engine problem or a trans problem, I have some mechanical experience and I can do a tune up but I have a feeling thats not the problem.... but I could be wrong. Today I had such a problem of getting it up to speed that I actually overheated the engine to the point where the fresh coolant in the reservoir was boiling. I really need to know what to do to fix this problem, my little car is my life line.

sounds like the clutch need's replacing !
