Engine Performance problem

I have a 1995 escort wagon, manual transmission, a/c and equipped with cruise control that has an intermittent extremely high idle/ rev condition. When starting the car often times the car will rev to the redline and will need to be shut off and restarted several times before idle will be controllable. During the course of driving the car the condition will come and go then sometimes it will be so bad the car will need to be parked. The condition started at the end of a four day 1400 mile trip.
