Engine Cooling problem

my car has been overheating over the pass week. as soon as i turn on my car the temp gauge climbs to over the half way mark. in just a matter of minutes it climbs to past the "H". when i pop my hood, my coolant in the reservoir is practically boiling. Is it that my thermostat isnt openning? If so how do i fix the prob. Ive been told it may be that i need a new fan relay. Any info would be helpful.

i would first replace the thermostat and get the radiator professionally cleaned & flow tested. check the pressure cap and make sure that the fans are turning on.

NOTE:
Perform the following tests with the engine COOL to avoid painful burns!!!

1: Fill the radiator to the top (open the bleeder valve above the t-stat when filling to "burp" any air).
2: with the radiator cap off, start the car and watch the top of the radiator neck for water spilling out. Some is normal. If it is spraying out or being pushed out more than about 1 inch above the neck, there is a problem.
2: Fill the radiator as above and put the cap on. Fill the overflow to the top.
Start the car and watch for bubbles in the overflow. Again, some are normal.
A steady stream of large (dime size or better) bubbles or bubbles that are "cloudy" looking are a sign of a problem.

If either of these are positive, there is a good chance that the head gasket is damaged.
