Engine Performance problem

I only notice the problem when I'm on a highway. When I get on the highway and I get it above 60mph, it begins jerking. Its odd because my tachometer reads normal until the jerking begins. Normal as in the dial stays between 2 and 3. But when the jerking begins the car sounds like its revving up and the tachometer goes sometimes all the way to 5. Sometimes I get scared to drive it on the highway. Whats wrong with my car? Is it the engine or what?
