Engine Performance problem

Engine Idles fine, system scan reads normal.
placed in O.D. or Drive engine is very sluggish at different intervals. usually it takes up to 1 mile of travel to reach 50 mph, when the pedal is depressed to the floor the rpm's go to 4000 but the speed drops and the engine power begins to fault out.
system scanner then flashes 3-4 times "check engine" stays on for a while then it goes out.
when it goes out sometimes the tranny and the engine work together as a new unit which means travel speed increases to 60 mph with no hesitation.

the fauling of the power causes any up-hill grade a decrease in travel speed and unconsiderable embarassement. there are times I travel 30 miles at 52 mph. then other times 45 mph on occassion I travel at 60 mph but becoming rare.
