Air Conditioning problem

Is there any way that a backyard mech. can check the compressor?
When I turn the a/c on to max and turn the fan on high all I get is hot air. I have added about 1.5 lbs of 134 to the system but it still blows hot air. I do not hear the compressor kicking on or off along with the fact that there isnt any engine drag.
Any help will be appreiciated....
