Air Conditioning problem

My temperature control unit will automatically turn on and blow hot air. Nothing I press turns it off. At some point, the buttons start working again. Then I will turn it off and back on and then the a/c will work but eventually it starts blowing hot air again and the buttons won't work so I cannot turn it off. It also happens much more frequently if the car has been sitting in the sun. The system works fine in the morning but in the afternoon/late evening, it's completely useless. Thank you.
