the battery is 6 mo.s old , but is going dead , I jump started to get home batt. gauge showing that it is not charging . and when I made it home truck would not restart. for the last few weeks it seemed like it was cranking a little slow at first but would then fire right up

Could be the alternator not putting out, battery not taking the charge and short circuit within the electrical system.
