Engine Performance problem

Hello, I have recently purchased a 93 Subaru Loyale with the 1.8 non turbo engine. I am trying to eliminate an engine knock which occurs during part throttle. It is intermittent, sometimes knocking heavily at light to medium throttle and other times there is no knock at all at any throttle condition from idle to full.

The car idles fine and otherwise runs smooth.

I've done routine tune up steps so far, replaced plugs and checked the timing... 20 degrees BTDC, right on spec at idle.

What else should I check?
