Transmission problem
1993 Jeep Wrangler 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 150K miles

Loud metallic grinding noise in 5th gear at hwy speed.
Shop installed "new" rebuilt transmission.
Seems to shift and drive OK now.

1) Transmision is louder than before.
Told by shop that transmission will break in and become less noisy over time.

2) At a stop, in neutral, clutch OUT, I can hear a spinning noise from the tranmission. Sounds like something rubbing or whirring. If I clutch IN the sound disappears. Again shop says "no problem".

Any help?

Might want to ask them on what fluid they are using in that trans. 75-90W, or even better, a synthetic equivalent. Did they replace the clutch disk only or the whole assembly (pressure plate and hydraulic concentric bearing/slave cylinder)? Did they machine the flywheel?

Dont think they replaced the clutch disk or the assembly.

Not sure if they machined the flywheel but again I dont think so.

They did replace the slave cylinder saying that it was easy to do since the transmission was out and that it would need to be replaced in the next 20K or so.

A higher viscosity than 75W-90 can cause excessive transmission noise. GL-5 should be the recommended lubricant from Jeep. A newly rebuilt transmission may make some noise at first but as long as you have the recommened end play then you should be ok. As for the clutch disk; have you ever had it replaced. They should have machined the flywheel. I hope they used a pilot tool to line up the clutch and pressure plate correctly...

The info and questions you have provided are very interesting however I now need to know what to do.

Should I go back the original service location?
Should I go to a transmission specialist?
Will someone examine the vehicle and tell me what is wrong?

What should I do?

Ask my questions of the people who installed the transmission. An opinion from another shop is always helpfull if in doubt of workmanship
