1993 Ford Mustang 4 cyl

Have a 1993 LX that was having issues starting, and once started it would like to die/stall out at no particular point. Replaced all 8 spark plugs, a little better starting ratio, but would still idle funny and stall out. Replaced the fuel filter and pump. Was running a lot better, but still minor problems. Rough getting it to start, and stay running. When you put it in gear idle drops way down and it would stall out. I managed to keep it revved up to drive and in OD around 40 to 55 MPH it starts to 'chug' and try to stall out, but if you put it in straight D, it does fine at these speeds. Changed the O2 sensor out, no significant improvements. Took it to a shop for diagnostics, they found nothing but now I have a 'check engine' light on. If you could point me in the right direction it would be great. Thanks.
