Transmission problem
1993 Dodge Shadow 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 139000 miles

My 93 Dodge Shadow is the cheap beater car I bought because my other vehicle needs a new transmission and I can't afford it. Now I'm worried that there's something wrong with the tranny in the Dodge. It starts great and drives fine until I hit about 40MPH then it seems to jerk and my RPM's flucuate wildly then it's fine again. I'm not a car person, but I checked the transmission fluid levels and it's fine. Last oil change the guys at Jiffy Lube said I needed a transmission flush, but I've always heard they try to sell you things you don't really need... Any suggestions?

Hi Bookworm,

Thank you for the donation.

I would never recommend transmission flushing. A fluid and filter change would be the most you need to do.

As to the rpm fluctuating wildly and jerking, it is more an engine misfiring fault rather than the transmission problem. I would suggest checking the ignition system, spark plugs and related parts.
