You know I was having some what of the same symptoms on my 93 silverado v8. I thought at first it was the filter or pump going out and replaced it. It would start to warm up was fine. sounded strong but when would take it for test drive and come to a stop my rpm would drop and my truck would shut off. The I would start it and it would die again. After replacing several parts it turned out to be the ignition control moduel (IC). mine would get hot and then shut off fuel into my carb(tbi) and would not get spark from my wires. this unit sends out signals to the fuel pump, spark plugs/ and to the computer. When I took mine off the clips were rusted bad. I'd look there first. part cost me $40

Does the engine have 300000 miles on it? If so, check the spark plugs, ignition wires, distributer cap and rotor first. Check for vaccume leaks and a sticking PCV valve.  If they are ok, it sounds like the throttle position sensor (TPS) and/or the ignition module is going bad. Considering the mileage I would just change the TPS -- as for the ignition module -- have that tested. Autozone or a place like that will test it for free. They may even test the TPS too. If you want to test the TPS sensor yourself let me know.
