1993 Buick Park Avenue 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 73000 miles

Hi. I have a 1993 Buick Park Avenue that recently had the "service engine soon" light come on. In addition to the light, the engine now frequently idles at 2000 + rpm ... it's been up to 3000, at idle. I can just take my foot off the brake, and the car will accelerate to 45 mph. It's a scary situation and I'd like to fix it. Any ideas as to what is wrong?
