1992 Other Isuzu Models 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 130k miles

I recently changed my Timing Belt on a 92 Isuzu Pickup with a 2.3 4cyl engine. The crank was advanced 3 teeth ahead of where is should have been on the old belt. The engine had been running quite well before, simply changed belt as a maintenance issue. With the installation of the new belt aligned correctly with the timing marks, the engine started okay, but ignition timing had to be advanced. My question is if there are any recommended options for cam timing that would explain what I found, or should I assume that the previous installation was done incorrectly?
