1992 Honda...Runs great sometimes...
Problem::After driving for awhile if we stop at a store, and get back in to start it, The transmission light (D4) starts blinking...The car will turn over, but not start..The shifting handle locks up and we can not even shift out of park...If we wait 10 or 15 minutes....It starts right up...Oil, water and tranny levels are fine..

That is the PCM's way of telling you it has recorded a fault in the system. Go to connector (see diagram) and install jumper wire, count flashes and get back to me with what you find. This will be the fault code. Do the brake lights work ok?

I did not orginally post this question. However, I am having a very similar problem. After performing th self-diagonistics as mentioned. The results appeared to be 4 long blinks followed by 3 short blinks. These were not from the "D4" light, but from the "Check Engine" light. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to the "D4" light blinking occationally and not starting when it does this. The transmittion on occasions will shift down into a lower gear while traveling at speeds near 60mph causing the RPM to run up to near 4500 RPM. Could the main relay cause something like this as well or does it sound like I may have a second problem to work with?

The main relay can cause it too but it might be a second problem which you need to check for DTCs.

Get the main relay problem solved first. Engine faults take precedence over trans.

OK, I replaced the main relay and have not had the problem with the "D4" light and not starting for a week now. However, my son is still saying that when the car has been out in the sun for some time it appears to intermittantly want to stall at highway speeds. I did the diagnostic test again and the check engine light just stays on, it does not blink at all. Is this normal?

When the SCS connector is bridged, the Check engine will stay on without any blinks if there is no fault codes encountered.

Stalling, hesitation or loss of power at highway speed are usually due to fuel starvation if no error codes are detected. Check for clogged fuel filter and kinked fuel lines.

You mentioned code 43, is it still showing?

I am no longer getting the error code 43, and the fuel filter has been replaced. It appears the problem my son has been describing is the transmission down shifting into 3rd gear while at hi-way speeds. It has also been noticed that when it starts the down shifting, if the car comes to a complete stop, it will remain in 3rd gear when trying to accellerate from the stop position. After a few minute the transmission appears to shift correctly. The transmission has been serviced recently (fluid changed). This problem occurs at random, it may occur 3 or 4 times a day or it may go a week and everything appear to operate normally. Any idea's?
