Engine Performance problem
1992 Ford F150 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

I am having a problem with engine performance while running off the front tank. I have to start the truck about three times before it stays running and when it does the RPM's are only around 500, and the engine seems to be losing gas pressure and jerks around. When I run off the back tank the RPM's is up at around 1100 to 1300 at idle and the engines seems to run very smooth. The rear tank has a leak so I do not use or fill it with gas, but it seems to be leaking all the time but never great amounts just drips. I did change the fuel filter and there was no change in the performance of the engine.

So my questions are as such;
1. Can a bad check value on my rear gas tank fuel pump reduce the fuel pressure of the front tank?
2. Is my front tanks Fuel pump bad?
3. Is it normal for some fuel to return to the tanks?

I seem to be having the same problem with my 92 Ford. I replaced the tank but not the pump. It acts like the fuel lines are empty when I try to start it if it sits for a few hours. I was told that the rubber hose connecting the fuel pump to the metal lines is dry rotted. This is inside the fuel pump.

He said it is a part of the fuel pump. It is inside the tank. I haven't had the money to fix mine yet. You can either replace the whole pump or take the pump out of the tank, there will be a plastic housing on the fuel pump. Take off this housing. There should be a rubber line that connects the pump to the metal lines. You know how there are two metal lines that come out of the top of the fuel tank from the fuel pump. Well before those two lines is a rubber line inside the housing of the fuel pump. Let me know how you go about fixing it.

well the easiest way i can think of fixing it for me is to replace the back tank, which leaks on mine, and only use the rear tank. Until i can come up with more money.
And in my opinion if the hoses in your tank are bad, I would just replace the entire fuel pump.
