either the starter is bad,
or you didn't wire something correctly.

i'm thinking more likely the positive battery cable is touching the small post that energizes the solenoid.

The same problem occured with the stock, original starter. Replaced it no difference, got the original starter checked at a shop they said it was fine. The spider fuel injector was replaced, along with spark plugs, wires, altenator, belt, and the air intake. The engine did not run when I bought the truck. The injector was out and broken at the time. Put a new charged battery in it and replaced connectors and and wires. When you turn the key the engine will crank for a few rotations, right before it starts it will make a very loud clunk! Then everytime you turn the key it makes the same clunk. If left for several min it will turn over just barely. This problem has been consistent through out replacemtent or cleaning of parts.

i have to go out on a road call, but i'll take a look when i get back

maybe i misunderstood what you first said.

is the starter trying to turn over the engine when you connect the battery cables?
