i put a new battey in my car, the old one was dead. i hooked the pos. then the neg. when i did this the neg. terminal started to smoke... i secured it down, turned the key and nothing.. a bad body ground???

The wiring was smoking? That can't be good. Do you mean the cable to the battery was smoking just from installing the battery? Was the polarity correct? I am not sure I understand.
