Engine Performance problem

my engine has of the past couple months had less and less power finaly this week i had to push the clutch on and of twice from a dead stop just to keep from dieing my friend thought it might be the catalytic converter so we took it of but it still almost sounds like its sputtering. it shakes violently and has poor idle consistantsy. since we took of the converter i havent taken it out of the neighborhood. were should we look first?
