Engine Performance problem

This may be a stupid question, but tonight my car started just fine, but after idling at a stop light I noticed that the lights were dimming and when I went to take off it refused to accelerate. It was jerking and backfiring and even with the gas pedal to the floor it would not reach 2000 rpm or go over 20 mph. It just continued to jerk heavily and then died and wouldn't restart. Help. I know nothing!
