1991 Buick Century reverse

Transmission problem
1991 Buick Century 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 96390 miles

I want to know what this means. I put my car into reverse and it backs up until i put gas on, then its hard to reverse and most of the time doesnt reverse after i put some gas on it. what does that mean? and how much will it cost me?
