Transmission problem

I drove my car this morning to work without any problems, just like any other day, but as I was just about to pull away from work, I noticed a serious problem with the engine. It seemed as if the engine was fighting to stay alive without shutting down. As I stepped down on the gas peddle, the car was moving, but was having a very difficult time moving foward. The gear seems like it doesn't want to change either. When I'm sitting at a red light, the engine stays running, but fights to stay alive. What's going on - is it the transmission? I called my local mechanic and he tells me that it could be the transmission, but will have to check it out in order to distinguish whether it's the transmission or something else. What are your thoughts - is it more than likely the transmission? What should I do - any suggestions? I don't have much money and would like to have this problem fixed for a reasonable cost - do I purchase a transmission or what other options do I have?
By the way, for the first time in many, many years, I put a bottle of carburetor cleaner, about a week ago, in the gas tank right before I filled-up the tank. Do you think the problem is a plugged fuel filter?
It's 1990 Mazda Eunos, 5 speed, automatic, 4 cylinder.
Your advice will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
