Engine Performance problem

Is there another simple swap-out engine that will fit this vehicle? Engine leaks, start-up noise, and a new growl sound when engine is cold.
I love this old thing, everything else from body to tranny, to interior looks and performs like new.
Another engine(with a little more torque) would be perfect. Is that a feasible alternative to a major overhaul?
