Engine Cooling problem

this car was bought by my 70 yold aunt and the ch. engine light was on. The salesman promised to fix anything that was wrong. The motor revs and the car overheats at times. It's also hard to start, she already has replaced the battery and starter. The alesman kept the car 3 weeks until I had a talk with him. He claimed he found a shorted wire, but that did not fix the problem. I want to look at it and want a qualified technician to look also. I would like to utilize yall's expertise and to have a idea of what we may be facing. I have some knowledge of cars, mainly parts hanger but I understand what yall are telling me. Thank You

1. Pull the code/s from the computer and comeback with it.

2. When it does start do you see white smoke coming out of the tail pipe?

2. Have the thermostat been replaced? Coolant level checked.
