Engine Performance problem
1989 Toyota 4Runner 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 215000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
when is start my 4runner it makes a loud knocking sound from the start......i cant go over 20 mph now and it knocks louder if i try to drive it then it over heats and white smoke comes out and the water starts to boil.....the knockin sound never quits.....i took it to a mechanic and they said the crankshaft went out..can i just replace that or do i have to replace the whole engine or wat....please help me!!!
it sound as if you have a few problems to deal with, i would be having a compression test, oil pressure test and head check done, i think you will better of re building the engine if you have been running with low oil pressure as the bearing knock is destroying the engine, and the over heating and white smoke could well be a head gasket or cracked head.
This is a very hard question to answer with out viewing the engine dismantled. If you are working to a budget you may be able to pick up a re-co and have that installed rather than doing yours, this will be quicker and often cheaper as well. As for extras. do the radiator all the hoses, thermostat, have the starter checked
