1989 Chrysler New Yorker 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 160,000 miles

I drive a 6 cylinder Chrysler New Yorker. One morning I went to start my car and it had a loud ticking noise. I spoke with my neighbors who are mechanics and they said it sounds like a lifter problem. One guy suggested draining all the oil, filling it up with kerosene, letting it run for 30 min., then draining the kerosene, and finally putting in new oil. Is this sound advice? I don't want to blow up my car at this point. Should I just replace the lifters? Thanks in advance for your advise.

Hi:
Yes, I have heard of people doing that, but never did I hear of someone running it for that long (maybe 30 seconds to a minute). The idea is to clean the inside of the engine. If you do it, and I'm not making that recommendation, after replacing new oil / filter, I would suggest running the car for about 50 miles and changing the oil and filter again to make sure it's all out.

As far as the ticking noise, yes it could be a stuck lifter.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Joe
