1989 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

hello,
i would like to know where the tachometer hooks up in the engine compartment because i am looking at doing a conversion where i replace the older style cluster in my GM truck with a more modern needle style cluster pulled from a newer GM truck. my truck currently is setup for just the speedometer and no tachometer and the cluster i would like to put in has a tachometer on it. does the transmission have something to do with it meaning is there a engine speed sensor on the newer trucks?
