Engine Mechanical problem
2002 BMW X5 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 70000 miles

hello

whilst driving the ABS and Brake and DSC light comes on and the car goes into slow mode. So i hooked up my scanner a Actron CP9175 OBD II AutoScanner and three codes came up. P1501, P0174 & P0171.
I recently changed the idle control valve which is P1505 because this seemed to activate the DSC light. Now I have it coming on again with the above codes. any ideas on how to adjust/replace P1501, P0171/4 ?

what is a vehicle speed sensor ?

thanks
Mark

First he P0717 and 74 are lean condition bank 1 &2. I would get some Mass air flow cleaner and clean the mass air flow that should take care of those two codes. As for the P1501 it is Idle air control valve closed. To test that it will take a mechanic because it takes a ocsilloscope to test it. Hope this was helpful if you need anything else just ask. Thanks

The P0171 and P0174 codes usually indicate an intake air leak or "false air" due to the intake air bellows cracking at the turn going to the idle air control valve. The ABS issue might be the DSC control unit having an internal fault because the vehicle speed is determined from the DSC module(dynamic stability control) that sends a speed signal to the instrument cluster. Having said all that the generic faults that you have extracted are sometimes a bit misleading when it comes to diagnosing OBDII compatible BMW vehicles and before you attempt to repair the issue, I would recommend seeking a local BMW knowledgeable shop and having a "short test" with the proprietary BMW software performed and the results analyzed by an expert such as myself. The results may be different than the generically generated codes and will help to correctly diagnose these issues.

Thank you for your reply. It has been very helpful. I did find a hole on the top of the plastic inlet hose. See picture attached. Could this cause these errors to appear ?
I will order a new part and if the codes still appear I will ask the local BMW guy to check the system. I reside in the Bahamas so we dont have much to work with nor brilliant BMW mechanics hence me asking you guys.
thanks again
Mark

Good eye mate! Replace the part and reset the faults and see if it solves this issue.
