Engine Cooling problem

About one month ago engine cut out while travelling at about 60mph. After leaving car for about 15 mins engine restarted. However then cut out again. usually leaving car for 10-15 mins allowed it to start again. My usual garage looked at it but I told them not to spend too much as I was going to trade in. They did say it was probably a sensor and also that the engine was running a little rich.They would not say for definite what the problem was. Car left on drive for about one week now will not start at all.
Couple of blogs I've read suggest it may be engine coolant control sensor. Other clue, for quite some while the temperature indicator has been faulty sometimes registering temp at others not moving from rest.
