Engine Cooling problem
1994 BMW 320 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 135000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi my coolant level light keeps coming on. I took it to my mechanic and he said it was a sensor. He put a new sensor in.I drove the car home with no light coming on then when I turned the car off the coolant level light came back on with the new sensor. The level does not appear to ever lower and there does not appear to be a leak. Please help because my mechanic is not able to fix my problem. I live in california and its 100 degrees and I fear driving the car because I do not want it to overheat.

Also my AC is not working after I just paid $1500 last summer for it to work and its already broken. Now I am told the compressor is bad. Do you recommend I buy a compressor from the junk yard?

If there are no leaks and it is not over heating and the level is normal, then I would not have too much concern about the low coolant warning. The A/C system may need a new compressor and you might consider looking at the bill for the previous repairs that cost $1500. Did they mention anything about the "health" of the system? Did they offer a warranty? Why was it $1500? That seems like a great deal of money to spend on air conditioning. Where in Ca. are you? I am in the bay area, maybe I could recommend someone.

I am in Sacramento. Do you think buying a new compressor from the junk yard is a good idea? Could the coolant light need to be reset?

I recommend doing some pricing around for the compressor as the junk yards would possibly be just inheriting someone else's problem, try looking online. There is no reset for the coolant level indicator, there is a physical reason for it to be on.
